Today a new survey was released from the CDC showing some startling rises in obesity. This study looked at obesity state by state and the results show that southern states seem to have the worst obesity rates.
The Southern states did prove to have the highest rates of obesity in the nation, coming in at 20.4% obesity. The rate in the Midwest was a bit lower with an obesity rate of 28.7%. Coming in with the lowest obesity rate was the West at 24.1%, with the Northeast states were just a bit higher at 24.9%.
The study from the CDC showed that Mississippi actually had the highest rate of obesity, with 34% of adults falling into this category. However, there are 11 other states that also have obesity rates that are above 30%. Although many of the states have seen a decrease in their obesity rates in the past two years, the drops in these rates have been quite small.
With the new data released, it shows that the 2010 Healthy People goal was not met. This goal was to lower the obesity rate to 20% or below. With this information, it shows that there is quite a ways to go to get to the target obesity rates in the United States at this point.
